“Anything you do, let it come from you.
Then it will be new. Give us more to see...”
Stephen Sondheim
That's actually my 2nd favorite Sondheim lyric, but I thought,
"I'm not good, I'm not nice, I'm just right," might be bad for business.
ABOUT
Jessica Doyle-Mekkes

Hi, I'm Jessica, my friends call me JDM.
I've been working with singers for over 15 years. I started out in Los Angeles, studying & apprenticing Speech Level Singing, while working primarily with recording artists, and the packs of feral 10-year-olds I directed during many, many stints of bill-paying children's theatre.

After LA ran its course, I ran home to West Michigan and opened The Doyle Vocal Studio. One student, found via Craigslist, grew into a multi-teacher community voice studio, serving hundreds of students each week. In 2013, I spent the summer attending all 3 levels of Jeanie LoVetri's Somatic Voicework(tm) training at the Shenandoah Conservatory. The training was great, and I still use some of it, along with techniques from SLS, my MM in Opera from CMU, Sheri Sanders' Rock the Audition series, and my own experiences as a performer.

Fast forward and I'm now the Head of Musical Theatre at East Carolina University where I've taught Applied MT Voice, MT Voice Ped, and Rock/Pop singing since 2017. Though my students still kick ass at NATS, and I love attending and presenting at the conferences, I'm less of a 'vocal coach' and more of a multi hyphenate: program head-professor-vocal coach-researcher-actor-author. Still a singing nerd at my core.
A few years ago, I branched out from working solely with singers to working with speakers, specifically women. I'm extremely passionate about helping women find their voices, literally (as a vocal coach) and then helping them use them to conquer the world, or at the very least, ask for the raise they totally deserve. I've been featured in woman&home, Authority Magazine, Thrive Global, AARP.... and presented for some amazing organizations including UKBA Gold Winner in Equity & Diversity SpeakOut Revolution. My debut book, I'm Speaking: every woman's guide to finding her voice & using it fearlessly is coming out Summer 2023 from Rowman & Littlefield Publishing House and I am so freaking excited.

Teaching, learning, and collaboration feed my soul, so if you'd like to do any of the above please get in touch & check out the options below. And be sure to buy the book!
Thanks for stopping by! xoxo
